The UC Davis Small Animal Surgical departments are comprised of teams of the nation's leading professionals. Our teams are led by world-renown, board certified surgeons and veterinarians who work side-by-side with highly skilled veterinary technicians. Together, we share a passion in providing clinical instruction as well as hands-on training to residents and students. Our services provide innovative and cutting-edge surgery to patients with the use of high-end technology. We offer various forms of surgical intervention including but not limited to maxillofacial reconstruction, minimally invasive surgery, and joint replacement. This position is part of a dedicated team who takes pride in the meaningful contributions made towards future veterinarians and veterinary specialists, and who want to make a difference in the world of veterinary medicine.

Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, responsible for treatment of patients with life-threatening illness or injury, whose conditions are likely to change on a moment-to-moment basis, and inducing and monitoring anesthesia. Facilitate the daily receiving and the daily surgery schedule of patients. Responsible for performing patient's pre-operative diagnostics, surgical preparation, and circulating in the OR as a surgical assistant. Perform patient care and write/review patient treatment sheets, and pick up pharmaceuticals from in house pharmacy. Communicate with clients, client education, and admit and discharge of patients. Occasionally be responsible for scheduling surgical appointments and recheck appointments, as well as reviewing client estimates.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Maneuver/lift equipment and materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Handle animals weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Contact with animals, including restraint of animals (sometimes fractious) is required.
  • Stand, bend, kneel, squat, reach above shoulder level and move on hard surfaces up to 8 or 10 hours each day.
  • Required to wear protective clothing for extended periods of time including: gown, coveralls, gloves, masks, face shields, goggles, sleeves and head covers.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Work occasional overtime; work schedule subject to change with prior notification.
  • Work under Medical Surveillance procedures and review in accordance with Federal and State Laws and Regulations and University Policy.
  • Work under regular exposure to zoonotic diseases, anesthesia, cleaning chemicals and exposure to radioactive patients.
  • Requires working with or around areas with sick animals, hazardous materials, and/or infectious diseases, and distraught clients.
  • Work in high traffic areas, confined or small spaces, noisy environment and tolerate unpleasant odors.
  • Fluctuating meal periods; work schedule may not allow a set meal period time each day.
  • No eating or drinking in surgery, treatment, procedure and other rooms or areas of the hospital.
  • Work in other related areas on an as needed basis.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

  • Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.
  • Experience working in a veterinary hospital environment with small animals and performing basic husbandry, patient care, venipuncture, and IVC placement.
  • Experience in anticipating surgeons and patient needs during surgery and providing requested instrumentation and equipment.
  • Experience in surgical preparation and positioning of patients.
  • Experience to determine physical status of patients, recognizing changes in patient condition and responding appropriately.
  • Experience communicating with clients and referring DVM.
  • Skill to provide intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill or anesthetized patients.

Preferred:

  • Experience in preparing O.R. and related areas, procure, set-up and review surgical and anesthetic equipment, instruments and supplies prior to and after surgery.
  • Experience in providing technical support in the O.R. and related areas.
  • Experience handling complications of various surgical procedures; anticipating and responding quickly to surgeons and patient's needs.
  • Experience in performing a surgical clip/shave, scrub without contaminating surgery site and transport/move patients to O.R.
