Digital Projects Coordinator

The Digital Projects Coordinator will oversee the processing and curation of the digital collections for Herrick Library and Scholes Library. Responsible for performing routines associated with all aspects of creating and managing digital collections including digitizing materials, handling archival material, and creating and organizing metadata. The position will oversee digital project documentation and the creation of digital objects according to best practices and established standards. The digital projects coordinator will also create metadata, catalog digital material, and coordinate to preserve digital items in an archival format for long-term storage

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for managing Herrick Library and Scholes Library collections in Alfred University Research and Archives (AURA) and the image collections in JStor.
  • Work with the New York Heritage Digital Collections, by maintaining and adding new collections related to Alfred University.
  • As a member of the Digital Projects Team, develop policies and workflows along with setting standards and timelines for digital projects.
  • Coordinate the intake of digital material submitted by students for addition to AURA and Jstor.
  • Scan original primary source materials from the Alfred University Archives & New York State College of Ceramics Archives and other collections as coordinated with the Digital Projects Team.
  • Successfully perform routine and repetitive tasks.
  • Coordinate digital preservation, including quality assurance, naming conventions, and record keeping.
  • Manage and maintain quality control of image metadata.
  • Make modifications to database structure as necessary to improve cataloging workflow and effective end user access.
  • Convert analog archival material into digital format according to best practices; create archival TIFF and PDF; create JPEG and other derivative files as needed.
  • Provide technical support for digitization equipment and training. Includes selection and configuration of appropriate hardware and related software. Includes equipment to support the migration of "analog" audio/visual materials to digital formats.
  • Provide consultation and oversight for copyright policy development and digital rights for the library's digital assets.
  • Maintain detailed statistics of items digitized, added to digital collections and overall usage.
  • Participate in the ongoing development, implementation, and assessment of systems that directly support the digital collections.
  • Act as contact for questions related to the digital collections.
  • Stay current with trends in digitization, metadata, etc. through ongoing staff development (readings, listservs, workshops, etc.)
  • Work with library staff on scanning best practices.
  • Supervise and train student workers on scanning, adding files and metadata to digital collections, and checking for quality control.
  • Provide scanning assistance and instruction for faculty and students to support classroom instruction and presentations.

Requirements:

  • Formal Education: Associate's Degree or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience: Academic library experience preferred. A demonstrated interest in digitizing material also preferred.
  • Additional Knowledge/Skills: Ability to learn and follow standardized practice for digitizing; excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy; strong written and oral communication skills; discretion dealing with personal and confidential materials; experience with digital projects and metadata; familiarity with computer software such as, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud Suite such as Photoshop, Audition, and Premier Pro; willingness to learn new technology; the ability to learn and effectively use specialized software, an understanding of how databases are constructed and used for the storage and retrieval of information; comfortable teaching others; integrity; and the ability to act independently in coordination with supervisor.
