Postdoctoral Research Fellow

Responsibilities:
The incumbent will be working on the model development to support the transition from Research to Operation (R2O). It includes the
CMAQ model development and any utility tools that can assist the transition of weather-aware emissions coupler module development into the operating NOAA's National Air Quality Forecasting Capability (
NAQFC) system. The incumbent will not only focus on the emission modeling using the
SMOKE model, and
CMAQ model, but also perform model evaluation, and develop any utility tools that can assist the modeling outcomes.
Required Qualifications:
- Air quality-related Ph.D.;
- Extensive knowledge in emissions inventory development, and/or emissions modeling;
- Expertise in meteorological modeling, data assimilation, numerical modeling and/or air quality modeling: WRF-SMOKE-CMAQ/CAMx;
- Model development: Emission model and/or air quality model;
- Expertise in scientific computer programming (FORTRAN, Python), Geographic Information System (GIS) and/or experience with Linux and Unix; and
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience compiling air quality and emission models in a Linux environment;
- Experience working with the U.S. emission inventories;
- Experience working with, or knowledge of, atmospheric observations from satellites;
- Experience analyzing and managing large datasets;
- Experience with machine learning techniques, spatial statistics would be a plus; and
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, as well as strong interpersonal skills.
