Charge Nurse - Evening shift (RN III)

Description

The Dr. John C. Corrigan Mental Health Center is seeking dedicated and compassionate Registered Nurse to function as charge nurse for the Evening shift. Provides direct care services and primary nursing care to assigned patients through development and implementation of individualized multidisciplinary treatment plans; meets patient nursing care needs as charge nurse or primary nurse, completing initial and ongoing assessments of patients to identify risks to health and safety; transcribes or verifies all prescriber orders and works with pharmacy to obtain, prepare, administer and document medications and treatments, including evaluation of patient's responses to same.

This is a Evening Shift position 2:45 pm to 11:15 pm

Days off are: Week I: Sunday/Thursday; Week 2: Tuesday/Saturday

Duties and Responsibilities (These duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive)



  • Provides direct care services and primary nursing care to assigned patients utilizing nursing process, and following current standards of care.
  • Participates in admission, discharge and transfer of patients as they occur, to facilitate a smooth transition, coordination and continuity of patient care.
  • Completes all required admission nursing assessments, including suicide and other risk assessments and screenings within timeframes outlined in facility protocols.
  • Functions as a member of the multidisciplinary treatment team to establish a comprehensive treatment plan with both person-centered short and long term goals and individualized interventions through consultations with other staff and through an analysis of data and symptoms.
  • Manages, supervises and evaluates the nursing care provided by MHW's and LPN's in the absence of a registered nurse of a higher grade to maintain the health and safety of the patients.
  • Completes assessment of each patient and documents results of assessment prior to patient attending outside appointments, fresh air break and any other off-unit activity to evaluate risk and to establish need for staff intervention.
  • Meets patient nursing care needs as charge nurse by communicating key patient information to appropriate nursing staff in order to insure integration, coordination and continuity of patient care.
  • Investigates patient and employee risk management incidents as they occur and completes written reports regarding the incidents, consulting with the physician and or facility administrator (or designee) as indicated.
  • Participates in staff development, infection control, quality improvement, pharmacy, lab, dietary, safety, risk management, quality management and restraint review committees and activities as assigned.
  • Provides and coordinates health teaching to patients and staff to increase knowledge base of staff and to promote health and wellness of patients to promote optimum level of function and documents all patient education in the electronic record.
  • Completes ongoing assessments of each patient and documents results in the patient's electronic medical records utilizing the appropriate format, including those assessments prior to the patient leaving the unit for meals, outside appointments, fresh air breaks and approved physician ordered passes to evaluate risk and to establish need for staff intervention.
  • Familiarizes self with accreditation requirements and expectations during hospital surveys on the Inpatient unit and participates in all activities to ensure ongoing compliance.
  • Provides professional expertise, knowledge and leadership in providing care to individuals in unexpected emergencies during tour of duty. Responds to medical emergencies and is knowledgeable, trained and updated according to hospital protocol about first aid, CPR and the use of the Automated External Defibrillator.



Preferred qualifications:



  • Experience working with individuals with serious mental illness, behavioral or mood disturbances


  • Experience working in facilities that are accredited by the Joint Commission, Department of Public Health, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

Qualifications

First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.

MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must have at least (A) one year of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience as a registered nurse in a recognized hospital, clinic or medical facility, and (B) six months of which must have been in a supervisory, administrative or managerial capacity.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL LEVELS IN SERIES: Current and valid registration as a professional nurse under the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing.*

*Recent graduates from an approved school of nursing must have applied for the first available registered nurse examination.

Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's license may be required.
