POSITION OVERVIEW
Gerald Family Care, P.C. (GFC) Attending Physicians provide the following primary care health services: (1) performing diagnostic, therapeutic, and clinical medical procedures, (2) evaluating patients by taking medical histories, conducting physical examinations, and ordering laboratory tests, and (3) identifying urgent, emergency, and continuing medical problems and recommending appropriate treatment plans and corrective actions. The GFC Attending Physician's immediate supervisor is the Vice President for Medical Operations (VPMO)/Medical Director.
Attending Physicians must provide written documentation to verify their compliance with the following minimum qualifications: (1) graduation from a medical school which is accredited by a nationally recognized medical profession accrediting body, (2) completion of an accredited residency training program in a primary care specialty such as Family Practice, General Internal Medicine, or General Pediatrics, (3) current board certification or eligibility for board certification in one of the primary care specialties listed above, and (4) current licensure to practice medicine in the District of Columbia and either the State of Maryland or the Commonwealth of Virginia.
FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Specific functions and responsibilities of the GFC Attending Physician include, but are not limited to the following:
oProviding routine medical care to all patients with scheduled appointments for initial or followup medical examinations, treatment, or evaluation during established office hours.
oProviding episodic medical care for unscheduled urgent, emergency, walk-in, and add-on patients during established office hours.
oResponding to telephone calls from patients who need emergency or urgent medical care in the office or at an emergency room in a timely manner.
oResponding to incoming telephone calls from other physicians, emergency rooms, hospitals, and nursing homes concerning medical care for practice patients.
oScreening and triaging patients, in the office and on the telephone, to determine their need for emergency, urgent or other medical attention.
oMaintaining proper documentation for any emergency or hospital care which the Attending Physician authorizes or denies, including the date, patient's name, insurance, problem summary, and reasons for the authorization or denial.
oConsulting with the Medical Director or another designated physician if additional medical advice is needed to help a patient, such as authorizing emergency room care, referrals to medical specialists or consultants, and calls concerning hospitalized patients.
oNotifying the Medical Director and the appropriate Office Supervisor if the Attending Physician's arrival will be delayed by 15 minutes or more on a scheduled work day.
oReviewing patient records to determine their health status and taking complete, detailed, and accurate patient and family medical histories.
oPerforming general physical examinations on all patients and performing developmental screening examinations on children.
oMaking decisions regarding data gathering and the appropriate management and treatment of a patient during the initial or follow-up evaluation of a medical problem or condition.
oRecording pertinent patient data in the patient's medical records, preparing patient summaries and developing comprehensive medical status reports.
oCollecting blood, urine, stool, and other specimens and initiating requests for laboratory studies, analyses, and cultures of such specimens.
oIdentifying normal and abnormal findings based on a patient's medical history, physical examination, and commonly performed laboratory studies.
oInitiating appropriate evaluation and treatment procedures in emergency and urgent situations such as cardiac arrest, respiratory distress, injuries, burns, hemorrhage, etc.
oPerforming diagnostic, therapeutic, and clinical procedures such as:
Specimen collection
oVenipuncture
oIntradermal tests Electrocardiograms
oVisual screening
Audiometry screening
Administration of injections, medications, immunizations, and intravenous fluids
oControl of external hemorrhage
oRemoval of superficial foreign bodies
oApplication of dressings and bandages
oCare and suturing of minor lacerations, wounds, burns, and skin infections
oCardiopulmonary resuscitation
oMaking referrals to medical specialists and consultants for specialized diagnoses and health care needs or second opinions as necessary.
oArranging admissions to hospitals, nursing homes or other inpatient health care facilities as needed to provide optimal patient care.
oConducting inpatient hospital rounds in accordance with the policies of each hospital or other inpatient health care facilities where the Attending Physician has admitting privileges.
oProviding counseling and instruction regarding common patient problems such as nutrition, family planning, exercise, smoking, behavior, and human development.
oReferring patients to community organizations and government agencies for extended social services and/or health care services.
oPrescribing and dispensing drugs as specified by applicable federal, state and local legislation, including the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and state or local medical governing boards and oversight committees.
oSupervising mid-level providers and ensuring that all patient medical records, prescriptions, and laboratory results initiated by mid-level providers under their supervision are reviewed and countersigned by the Attending Physician within 48 hours.
oCompleting applications and providing supporting documentation to obtain and maintain hospital privileges and become a participating provider in designated health plans.
oPerforming other medical and/or administrative duties assigned by the Medical Director, including participation in health plan audits and medical record reviews.
