Varian Medical Systems is looking for a Sr. Staff Software Engineer to join our ablation development team. The Principal Software Engineer will develop software in a medical device environment, from initial design through V&V testing with significant component ownership. This position will be responsible for analyzing, designing and developing software for a new ablation device.
  • Architect, Design, develop and modify programs and software, including medical devices, production tools, and test fixtures in a regulated environment.
  • Work with electrical, mechanical, physics, systems, software and marketing teams to develop and refine requirements.
  • Active participation in architecture, design and code reviews, unit testing, software debugging, system troubleshooting and overall resolution to ensure the quality of software implementation and the safety, performance and reliability of integrated software and hardware.
  • Research product development solutions and provide analysis for product direction.
  • Primary architect for software/hardware interfaces, algorithm, GUI, OS selection, tool set etc.
  • Help mentor junior engineers
  • Create related documentation and support materials in conjunction with design and development activities.
  • Train internal and external users on the software interfaces.
  • Consult and solicit feedback from internal stakeholders to identify customer needs and translate these requirements into the software interfaces. In addition, provide support regarding product development to internal departments as it relates to software design.
  • Ensure that all interactions and engagements are carried out with the highest ethical and professional standards and that all work is accomplished with quality and in accordance with Varian values
  • Innovation of relevant sensing and control technologies.
  • You should be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with schedule commitments.
  • Maintain and update SW for current devices as necessary.
  • Support manufacturing and quality by participating in NC, CAPA, and customer complaint analysis.
  • Exemplify Varian Cultural Beliefs.
Minimum Required Skills and Knowledge
  • Bachelor's Degree in computer science or related field required, Master's Degree preferred.
  • 15 + years of experience developing embedded software.
  • Technical competency with C, C++, embedded software, and IEC 62304 required. Preferred experience with Windows, RTOS environments, Linux kernel, ARM, PSoC, driver development, integration of different OEM modules, and user interface design.
  • Experience with software driven electromechanical devices is required.
  • Hands-on hardware troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience working in the Medical Device (or similarly regulated) industry desirable.
  • Highly self-motivated and directed with keen attention to detail.
  • Ability to adapt and learn new technologies
  • Proven analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion by effectively prioritizing, planning, tracking and executing team activities in a high-pressure environment.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize workload, multi-task and manage a diverse mix of issues, responsibilities and challenges
  • Self-starter with a hands-on, pragmatic approach and a "can do" attitude
