Research Nurse
The Cancer and Blood Disorders Institute (CBDI) is one of the six disease-oriented institutes/departments at Johns Hopkins All Children's (JHACH). Each institute exists to facilitate the inter-collaboration of the three pillars of academic medicine- research, clinical care, teaching- to advance pediatric health.

The CBDI is comprised of many research teams within the realm of clinical research, translational research and basic science research. The Josephson Laboratory and Research Team is a translational research team led by the primary investigator, Dr. Cassandra Josephson.

We are seeking a Research Nurse who will work with a clinically focused research team that includes other Research Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Coordinators Research Assistants, and biostatisticians who work with Dr. Josephson to develop treatment and investigate mechanisms of disorders and diseases in infants, children and adolescents requiring blood product support through transfusion. Further, the Research Nurse will proactively support efforts that ensure delivery of safe patient care and services and promote a safe environment at JHACH. This position will report directly to the primary investigator, Dr. Cassandra Josephson, with a dotted line reporting relationship to the JHACH RN Clinical Research Manager.

The Research Nurse is the leading staff member for the Josephson lab and should have good time management skills, enjoy working on several projects simultaneously, and can meet deadlines. Additional qualities required or success in this role include excellent organizational skills and a willingness to help out members of the collaborative team.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Primary Professional Development Responsibilities:
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional development and remains current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education events or programs.
  • Maintain current knowledge of all JHACH, JHU, and clinic policies and procedures related to clinical and relevant research operations, and assumes responsibility for appropriate application, and compliance.


Research Responsibilities include:
  • Manages clinical research activities for the Josephson Laboratory and Research Team that are involved in single and multi-center research studies with funding from NIH/NHLBI and other extramural and intramural sources.
  • Assists with the management of protocol related health problems, and maintains communication with members of the research team in a confidential manner and in accordance with good clinical practice.
  • Performs participant screening, enrollment, study activities, and communication.
    • Coordinates study visits and procedures, including specimen acquisition, transport, documentation, and shipment.
    • Completes sample preparation protocols in laboratory required for additional sample analysis
    • Maintains Josephson Lab equipment (including maintenance and service contracts) and supply resources for research studies.
    • Manages lab and research study supplies. Orders supplies for lab and research studies.
    • May assist with scheduling and coordinating assay analysis for research samples performed by other cores and service centers.
    • Obtains informed consent by following Johns Hopkins' All Children's policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
    • Schedules study-specific visits in conjunction with ancillary departments.
  • Provides direct patient care to conduct research protocols.
    • Provides direct nursing care according to Johns Hopkins standards of practice.
    • Completes phlebotomy for acquisition of research specimens, if needed.
    • Administers research medications under a study-specific protocol., if needed
    • Completes nursing physical assessment, vital signs, and venous access.
    • Completes clinical assessment and safety evaluation of study subjects and notifies Principal Investigator when appropriate.
    • Reviews and grades adverse events, concomitant medications, VS's, and lab results and notifies Principal Investigator when appropriate.
    • Provides health education to participants as part of a study protocol.
    • Completes nursing documentation and order entry within the medical record.
  • Manages all regulatory processes related to clinical research activities.
    • Completes Institutional Review Board preparation, submission, modifications, reporting, and termination activities.
    • Assists in maintaining all regulatory documents.
    • Participates in sponsor correspondence, monitoring, and study meetings.
  • Completes data management activities.
    • Assists in development and completion of source and case report form documentation.
    • Completes data entry and ensures data integrity.
    • Supports statistical service needs.
  • Performs quality and education activities.
    • Monitors compliance throughout all study activities.
    • Engages compliance oversight as needed.
    • Participates in education activities to support specific research activities and primary role.
    • Maintains all licensure, certification, and system education requirements for role.
    • Participates in educational activities related to study needs for study staff, investigator team, and patient care staff.
    • Participates in departmental policy and quality projects.


Other Research Responsibilities include:
  • Maintains research related documents and correspondence in a confidential manner, including informed consent forms and research data.
  • Delegates data query resolution and reviewing monitoring reports to identify and correct errors. Reports protocol deviations and adverse events in a timely manner.
  • Interacts with research subjects by email, phone, and in-person in a professional manner.
  • Meets with the research team on a regular basis, and participates in troubleshooting and resolving issues for research studies.
  • Facilitates teamwork between research team, postdocs, research pharmacy, research unit staff, study coordinating center and other research sites.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Individual must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Florida.
  • Must maintain current licensure and certification during duration of employment.
  • Acceptable completion of the JHACH credentialing process.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • Two years of clinical or research nursing experience preferred.


Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Ability to work well with families and patients/research subjects.
  • Documentation of completion of HIPAA and research subject protection education required within 30 days of hire.
  • Self-directed and motivated to work independently toward short- and long-term goals.
  • Good communication, organization, and interpersonal skills.


Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
  • CITI Certification Research, Ethics, and Compliance current or within 30 days of hire.
  • Current American Heart Association or American Red Cross BCLS CPR certification required upon hire and must be kept current during duration of employment.


Physical Requirements:
  • Sitting, standing and walking for extended period.
  • Reaching by extending hand(s) or arm(s) in any direction.
  • Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s).
  • Ability to move standard equipment through a hospital or clinical environment.
