Sr. Clinical Social Worker
The Johns Hopkins University Student Health & Well-Being practice group supports well-being, primary care, and mental health services for JHU students and learners across all nine schools within the University. Our integrated service delivery model provides:

  • The Johns Hopkins University Counseling Center (CC) provides services to students in full-time graduate and undergraduate academic programs in the Schools of Arts and Sciences and Engineering located on the Homewood campus, as well as the School of Education and Peabody Institute of Music.


We are seeking a Clinical Social Worker to work full-time for a one-year contract position. The duties of this position are focused on initial assessment, short-term oriented individual counseling, and daytime on-call coverage. At this time, the Counseling Center is providing both in-person and remote (via Zoom) services to students, with all of these services provided by staff who are on-location at the Counseling Center. This is a full-time, benefits eligible position. Please Note: We are currently posting three versions of this one position (Clinical Social Worker, Psychologist, and Mental Health Counselor).

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Maintains clinical case load of individual student clients.
  • Provides initial assessments and when appropriate makes referral to Counseling Center consulting Psychiatrists.
  • Provides daytime on-call coverage and crisis intervention support.
  • Maintains case management notes in a timely and complete manner; completes all related paperwork as required by the Counseling Center.
  • Attends weekly clinical case management meeting, as needed.
  • Provides consultation services to the University community, parents, and others concerned about a student.
  • Generally, the person in this position will be minimally supervised by an assigned Associate Director or licensed staff member. Unlicensed psychologists will receive supervision from a licensed staff member.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • Master's Degree in Social Work required.
  • Two years of experience providing clinical services is required for Masters level applicants.
  • Experience providing individual and group counseling to a diverse college student population.


*Applicants who do not meet the posted requirements but are completing their final academic semester/quarter will be considered eligible for employment and may be asked to provide additional information confirming their academic completion date.

Licensure, Certification & Registration:
  • Licensure as a Licensed Certified Social Workers-Clinical (LCSW-C) in MD is strongly preferred.
  • Licensure as LCSW may be considered.


Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Experience in a University Counseling Center is desirable.
  • Experience conducting initial assessments.
  • Experience providing short-term oriented counseling.
  • Evidence of providing services to a diverse population.
  • Ability to work with a wide range of college student presenting concerns in individual and group counseling.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, campus departments, or student groups.
  • Commitment to actively engage in practice with diverse populations.
  • Commitment to one's own ongoing development of multicultural competence as a psychologist.

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
