Clinical Program Specialist
The Clinical Program Specialist provides administrative services to patients under the auspices of the Retina Professor, Dr. Peter Gehlbach.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Coordinate patients' medical journey including pre-arrival tasks, scheduling appointments, financial clearance, onsite case coordination, coordinating access to patient education resources, facilitating post-care requests.
  • Call patients prior to visits to provide needed information before their arrival.
  • Integrate concierge elements of access to care to ensure outstanding customer service.
  • Help less able, less privileged disenfranchised or medically debilitated patients understand what to expect during their visit.
  • Review and resolve obstacles for patients trying to access and navigate getting into and out of the clinic as well as the Johns Hopkins campus and parking areas.
  • Coordinate transportation for patients who cannot drive or have no options for transport.
  • Greet patients upon arrival and guide them through the registration process.
  • Walk patients to waiting areas. Escort them into the exam room when called.
  • Guide patients to various other areas within Wilmer for additional services as needed.
  • Assist with maximizing patient throughput in the clinic.
  • Identify patients with the greatest need of assistance each day and triage them accordingly.
  • Ensure the patient is scheduled for any follow up visits recommended by the physician.
  • Work closely with patients' family and friends to answer administrative questions and concerns.
  • Ensure the patient and their family member/s have the care plan provided by the physician.
  • Minimize patient frustration and confusion during their visit.
  • Identify, track and report on practice patterns and inefficiencies for purposes of improving patient services.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Three years related experience. Additional experience may substitute for education.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
