Landscaping and Groundskeeper Workers

Job Purpose:

Maintain property grounds using hand or power tools or equipment. Workers perform a variety of tasks sod laying, mowing, trimming, planting, watering, fertilizing, digging, raking.

Essential Duties and/or Responsibilities:

  • Operate powered equipment such as mowers, tractors, chain-saws, electric clippers, sod cutters, and pruning saws.
  • Mow and edge property using power mowers and edgers.
  • Shovel snow from walks, driveways, and parking lots, and spread salt in those areas when applicable.
  • Care for established lawns by mulching, aerating, weeding, grubbing and removing thatch, and trimming and edging around flower beds, walks, and walls.
  • Use hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge and brush trimmers, and axes.
  • Prune and trim trees, shrubs, and hedges, using shears, pruners, or chain saws.
  • Gather and remove litter.
  • Maintain tools and equipment.
  • Mix and spray or spread fertilizers, herbicides, or insecticides onto grass, shrubs, and trees, using hand or automatic sprayers or spreaders.
  • Provide proper upkeep of sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, planters, veteran sitting areas, and other grounds features.
  • Assure lawns are watered.
  • Trim and pick flowers, and clean flower beds.
  • Rake, mulch, and compost leaves.
  • Follow planned landscaping designs to determine where to lay sod, sow grass, or plant flowers and foliage.
  • Plant seeds, bulbs, foliage, flowering plants, grass, ground covers, trees, and shrubs, and apply mulch for protection, using gardening tools.


Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Mechanical - Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Repairing - Repairing machines or systems using the needed tools.
  • Time Management - Managing one's own time
