Grants and Contracts Intern
We are seeking a Grants and Contracts Intern. This is a casual, paid internship for a junior or senior college student for approximately five months and up to 1 year, working 10 to 18 hours a week (flexibility to accommodate school schedules), during the Fall, Spring, and/or Summer semesters of 2022 - 2023. The Intern will participate in work related to the management of sponsored funding in SOM departments.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

Attend trainings to gain knowledge in
  • External federal guidelines/procedures for grants and contracts (focus on NIH), as well as other primary SOM sponsors and their type of support, policies, and application processes.
  • JHU and SOM-specific policies and procedures related to sponsored activity, including award set-up and management; research compliance regulations and required trainings.
    • Assist department research administration staff with grants/contracts pre- and post-award functions including: proposal submission and budget development; project initiation and award set-up; account maintenance and reconciliation; subrecipient set-up and monitoring; effort reporting and cost sharing; billing/invoicing, financial reporting, and closeout.
    • Develop skills in SAP navigation, procedures and transactions; Business Warehouse reporting; and HR accounting as they relate to the management of sponsored funds.
    • Work independently on a small portfolio of accounts.
    • Assist in the preparation of periodic budget tracking and forecasting to ensure budget accountability and effective management of records.
    • Assist with implementing accounting and budgetary controls consistent with government agency needs and JHU/SOM policies.
    • Assist Research Finance Operations in analyzing trends with the goal of risk mitigation and capitalizing on available financial opportunities.
    • Special Projects with finance and research administration focus.
    • Participate in job shadowing opportunities across the JHU central offices, Internal Audits, and SOM departments.


    Minimum Qualifications
    • Candidates are eligible to apply if you are enrolled as a full-time university junior or senior with a GPA of 3.0 or better, majoring in a business-related field.
    • Proficiency with MS Word and Excel required.

      • Solid analytical skills and enjoy working with numbers.
      • Strong organizational time management skills, effective communication, and professional writing skills.
      • Self-motivated with a high level of initiative and ambition.
      • Enthusiastic, demonstrate "can do" and "team working" attitude with an ability to learn quickly.
      • Ability to multi-task and meet assigned commitments.

      30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis.       The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
