Assistant Director of Development, Neurology
General Description:

The Assistant Director of Development, reporting to the Executive Director of Development, works with the Neurology Development team in the stewardship of donors and volunteers, donor relations, planning and execution of stewardship events, and developing marketing and communications. The typical schedule will be Monday through Friday, 8:30 am - 5:00pm. This will include some nights, early morning, and weekend work with travel for selected events required. The Assistant Director develops, deploys, and promotes key components of departmental programming to engage and thank donors and proactively identifies, develops, implements and evaluates new opportunities to engage, steward, and recognize leadership volunteers and donors at all levels. The Assistant Director develops and oversees marketing and communications efforts on behalf of the Department.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Stewardship - 50%

Works collaboratively with colleagues across medicine and the institution to build stronger donor relations, acknowledgment, and recognition processes, assisting department gift officers with stewardship of donors, ensuring donors remain connected to Johns Hopkins through regular thank you phone calls, emails, and in-person contact.

  • Responsible for increasing awareness of the philanthropic impact of gifts across the department by creating impact stories and collateral for gift officers, acknowledgment letters, donor recognition programs, and other stewardship reports and materials.
  • Responsible for stewarding and thanking volunteers in their effort to raise funds for the department.
  • Engage with donors, faculty members, volunteer leaders, team members, and others as needed, to source content.
  • Become familiar with the formal and informal departmental goals, standards, policies, and procedures.
  • Develop and implement standardized stewardship and endowment report strategies and templates, as well as a stewardship protocol for donors in line with Johns Hopkins University's mandatory stewardship program.
  • Through the department's implemented gift-impact reporting process, create content for and manage the both current use and endowment reporting process for the department.


Stewardship Events - 20%
  • Responsible for the planning and implementation of a comprehensive slate of stewardship events and projects that strategically engage and thank donors. This includes donor recognition receptions and dinners, donor-funded lectures, symposiums, professorship installations, and memorial services, among others.
  • Identifies strategies, goals, and metrics for success for various stewardship events through comprehensive project planning. Ensures attendance stewardship goals are met or exceeded.
  • Collaborating with gift officers, plans and executes stewardship events from start to finish, using independent judgment to create event timelines, and set/stay within a given budget. Provides essential support in follow-up to all events.
  • Manages the process and creates briefings in relation to Neurology Development stewardship events for President and Provost of the University, Dean/CEO of Johns Hopkins Medicine, President of the Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System, Neurologist-in-Chief, Department Directors, and senior leadership of DAR and FJHM.
  • Acts as key stewardship events liaison with Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine Senior Management, Directors, DAR staff, DRDE, Communications, and Public Affairs staff, faculty, trustees, and VIPS. Staffs this constituency at events, as needed.


Communications and Marketing - 30%
  • Analyze donor engagement and giving data to identify target populations for marketing efforts.
  • Develop creative ideas and design concepts, and help maintain and distribute marketing collateral for the department's development office.
  • Create materials to engage prospective donors and to thank new donors at all levels.
  • Authors, plans, and oversees the writing of a variety of stewardship materials, collaborating with faculty and development colleagues as appropriate.
  • Responsible for creating and delivering marketing ideas and activities for events tied to cultivation and stewardship of donors, especially for third-party events. Creates marketing materials, manages projects, and ensures consistency in messaging.
  • Serves as a liaison to Central Development Communications Office and Johns Hopkins Medicine Communications Office.
  • Create and draft a monthly e-newsletter via Constant Contact to advertise news and events to 22,000+ donors and patients.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree
  • Two years related experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will possess the ability to build relationships with donors and volunteers, develop measurements to analyze the efficiency and success of programs, and implement effective, strategic improvements where needed.
  • She/he will demonstrate critical thinking skills; she/he will have great attention to detail, organizational skills, initiative, exceptional writing skills, oral communication, and editing abilities, and the ability to
  • prioritize effectively, work on multiple projects simultaneously, solve problems, and work both independently and within teams.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, especially Word and Excel, is required; preference is given to candidates with working knowledge of graphic design software.
  • Must have an openness to learning new software and database programs. It is imperative that all team members present themselves with professionalism and exercise good judgment, diplomacy, and discretion with diverse populations and situations.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. for short distances - must be able to maneuver subway system and/or transport oneself to various off-site locations. Must be able to sit or stand for one to three hours.
