Overview

Join our Seton Medical Center Team as a Full Time Night Shift Lead Medical Lab Scientist! Candidates may be eligible for a $7,500 Sign on Bonus.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist performs clinical laboratory testing and assists in promoting a quality of service based on accuracy and timeliness in reporting results. Under general supervision the Medical Laboratory Scientists are responsible for assisting the department manager in the effective operation of the laboratory through the coordination of all activities in their respective responsibilities.


Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:

  • Participates in activities that result in product standardization and cost savings or cost control
  • Coordinates daily operation of section/shift such as inventory, PM of equipment, QC/QA, etc
  • Assists lead/manager with regulatory requirements including collating data for inspections and writing procedures/policies per CLSI (NCCLS) standards
  • Takes an active and supportive role in implementing change
  • Promotes a culture of patient and staff safety
  • Collaborates with department lead or manager to meet identified needs/goals of the department
  • Supports the liaison program with developing needs and information for other areas of the healthcare team
  • Performs additional duties routinely above and beyond standard job assignments
  • Anticipates and responds to changing and/or emergency situations
  • Serves as a positive resource for peers and students
  • Promotes teamwork
  • Assumes charge/shift leader as appropriate
  • Processes all applicable specimens in the laboratory
  • Performs tests following established department policies and procedures exercising independent judgment when necessary
  • Operates monitors and maintains laboratory equipment according to established policies and procedures
  • Performs and documents defined quality control procedures required for tests assayed
  • Maintains education (independent study) as outlined in 2005 ASCP requirements (36 hours CE during a 3 year period)
  • Serves as a resource for MT I, MLTs and Clinical Lab Assistants
  • Follows established procedures for the environment of care and laboratory safety
  • Accepts responsibility for learning and maintaining knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures
  • Maintains current on department based competencies, including all regulatory requirements
  • Remains current on procedures for the environment of care and laboratory safety
  • Pursues professional and educational development
  • Develops goals aligned with with the department/network goals
  • Uses time, supplies, equipment and resources judiciously
  • Utilizes time management skills to complete work
  • Recognizes own limitations and seeks assistance as needed
  • Utilizes appropriate chain of command
  • Utilizes courtesy and sensitivity, demonstrates effective and respectful communications
  • Cooperates in staffing and scheduling requirements to meet the needs of the department.
  • Participates as a team member by assisting others with patient care needs, department activities, etc.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Skills and Attributes:

  • Must have the ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic
  • Accepts responsibility for learning and maintaining knowledge of laboratory practices and procedures
  • Accepts responsibility for remaining current on department based competencies, including all regulatory requirements
  • Accepts responsibility for remaining current on procedures for the environment of care and laboratory safety
  • Accepts responsibility for learning appropriate specimen collection procedures

Qualifications

Education/Skills/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in related field is required
  • 5 years of recent laboratory experience at the level of a Medical Laboratory Scientist II is preferred, may substitute for all of the required experience with one of the following specialty certifications: Specialist in Blood Banking SBB(ASCP), Microbiology SM(ASCP), Hematology SH(ASCP), Chemistry SC(ASCP), Cytotechnology SCT(ASCP) or Lab Safety SLS(ASCP) or Diplomate in Laboratory Management DLM(ASCP)

Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:

  • Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (General) by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) or Medical Technologist by the American Medical Technologists MT (AMT) is required
