General Purpose of Job: To actively engage in an intensive phlebotomy training program designed for adult learners. Upon successful completion of this course, the trainee will be prepared to work as a Phlebotomist in a hospital or an outreach setting. Essential Duties: This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
- Demonstrate a positive, professional, caring attitude, and a commitment to providing outstanding patient care at all times.
- Demonstrate a tolerant and loving attitude toward fellow trainees, caregivers, and trainers. Demonstrate the ability to work as part of a team.
- Attend class daily, Monday - Friday, for a period of approximately four weeks and participate in on-the-job training in the hospital for an additional four weeks.
- Actively engage in learning, including reading textbooks, policies, and procedures, memorizing a significant amount of material, and participating in hands-on-training. The trainee is expected to be self-motivated, to work independently at times, and to assume personal responsibility for professional growth and development. There will be nightly homework assignments that must be completed and turned in on time.
- Demonstrate mastery of the classroom material on homework assignments, quizzes, and exams. The trainee must pass the final examination in order to advance from the classroom to the hands-on-training in the hospital.
- Learn to perform venipunctures, arterial punctures, blood cultures, and micro collection techniques (e.g., heel and finger punctures) in accordance with established policies and procedures. Trainees will draw their classmates' blood and have their own blood drawn by other trainees nearly every day of the classroom period.
- Learn the best practice regarding patient identification and adhere to it during every patient encounter.
- Learn infection control policies for blood borne pathogens, including appropriate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE). Trainees will handle blood products and care for patients with every sort of infection. Trainees must wear appropriate PPE, including gloves, gowns, and masks. Trainees must participate in FIT testing to be sized for an appropriate N-95 mask.
- Learn established policies for attendance, appearance, punctuality, and professional performance and adhere to them.
- Use a handheld electronic device to receive lab orders and for scanning barcodes.
