The full salary range for this position is $59,727 - $113,704. The budgeted salary that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $59,727-$65,075.

About the Interdisciplinary Humanities Center

The IHC fosters interdisciplinary research in the humanities, fine arts, and humanistic social sciences. It supports scholarship that makes original contributions to established areas of humanistic study, traverses disciplinary boundaries, and advances emerging fields of inquiry. A cornerstone of the Center's activities is its year-long public events series, which explores topics and issues of far-reaching concern. As a member of the UC Consortium of Humanities Centers, the IHC serves as a link between the campus community and the University of California system.

The IHC is committed to advancing the civic mission of the university and sponsoring public humanities initiatives that engage humanistic practices in addressing issues of social consequence. The IHC collaborates with community partners and academic departments across the UCSB campus on programs in community-engaged arts and public humanities and sponsors courses that train humanities graduate students to pursue multiple career paths.

IHC Assistant Director

General Summary

Reporting to and coordinating with the Director and Associate Director, the Assistant Director (AD) will administratively oversee and develop programs for graduate and undergraduate students designed to provide training and experience in publicly engaged humanities and arts programs and events.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Assistant Director will assist in the innovation and expansion of existing community humanities and arts programs housed at the IHC and of others sponsored by academic departments. The Assistant Director will facilitate relationships with local schools, and governmental, nonprofit, and private organizations to collaborate on the creation of non-traditional learning environments, sponsoring student internships and mentoring programs, and fostering humanities and arts research activities.

The Assistant Director will coordinate the IHC's public events series and will assist with the planning and execution of all IHC events. In collaboration with the Associate Director, the Assistant Director will oversee the IHC's marketing and communications efforts, including maintaining its website, social media channels, and email and print communications. They will also serve as a liaison to IHC Research Focus Group (RFG) conveners.

The Assistant Director will assist with budgetary tracking for all community-engaged and academic programs, seek out new intra- and extramural funding opportunities, and assist with grant applications. The AD will supervise undergraduate student assistants who support the clerical and administrative needs of the IHC's programs and events.

The Assistant Director, in collaboration with the Director and Associate Director, will manage graduate students employed in public humanities programs. They will oversee the creation and dissemination of information about humanities and arts programs and events via websites, social media, announcements, advertisements, and publications. For academic certificate programs administered by the IHC, the Assistant Director will be responsible for all paperwork associated with certificate requirements and awards.

Qualifications
Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

The minimum requirement to be considered an applicant is a Master's degree in the humanities, social sciences, or a related field at the time of application.

Preferred qualifications

Ph.D. in the humanities, social sciences, or a related field at the time of application.

At least one year of experience in administration in a university setting

At least one year of experience in event planning and execution of public events, and marketing and communications

At least one year of experience in producing or overseeing publicity and communications, including website content, social media, informational emails to university affiliates and community members, and/or program brochures

Have a minimum of six months of experience supervising graduate or undergraduate students

Excellent customer service skills

Superior oral and written communication skills and copy-editing skills

Excellent organizational and planning skills

Ability to keep track of multiple, competing deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment

An ability to work collaboratively

An interest in civic engagement and ability to advocate for the importance of the humanities in higher education and in the public sphere

Ability to contribute to the diversity and excellence of the academic community through research, teaching, and service as appropriate for the position
