Research Technologist

The department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology is seeking a Research Technologist. Selected candidate will prepare clinical samples for flow cytometric testing, operate and maintain flow cytometry instrumentation in an institutional core facility. Selected candidate may also perform flow cytometry experiments for research projects.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare clinical specimens for flow cytometry analysis.
  • Perform daily calibration, operation and maintenance of flow cytometers and other facility equipment.
  • Carry out and/or assist with data analysis using flow cytometry software packages, including DiVa, FlowJo.
  • Perform flow cytometry research experiments.
  • Assist facility users with instrument operation and data analysis.
  • Identify and diagnose problems, perform troubleshooting and coordinate with external technical support for advice or repairs.
  • Demonstrate organization, efficiency, problem solving, resourcefulness and flexibility.
  • Attention to detail, critical thinking, good communication and skills.
  • Position requires BA/BS degree in biological sciences or equivalent.
  • Applicant should have laboratory experience to include basic laboratory skills and experience working with biological samples.
  • Perform reasonable job duties even if not part of the job description, as assigned by the Principal Investigator or laboratory supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities May Include, but are not limited to,

  • Supporting research projects in the flow cytometry facility including thawing cryopreserved cells, staining cells, acquiring flow cytometry samples on various flow cytometers.
  • Preparation of standard laboratory solutions, media, and reagents following standard laboratory protocols and procedures.
  • Monitor inventory of general laboratory supplies and place orders when needed.
  • Using autoclave.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or related field.
  • Some related post-undergraduate work experience preferred.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using basic laboratory equipment, pipettors, centrifuge, light microscope.

Starting Salary Range: $15.50 - $26.00 HRLY ($45,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
Employee group: Full Time
Schedule: Generally M-F 8:30am-5pm, however occasional Saturday and/or Friday evening may be required
