POSITION SUMMARY

The Ski Patrol Director is responsible for the overall safety of the ski area in both summer and winter including directing the ski patrollers and bike patrollers teams to aid and assist the guests and to provide first aid and emergency transportation to injured skiers/ bikers/ patrons from the slopes or immediate vicinity to the Patrol triage location. The Ski Patrol Director promotes a culture of safety for guests and employees including ski and snowboard safety, enforcement of "The Responsibility Code, understands and operates within the Colorado Ski Safety act, biking safety, awareness and control, maintains proper safety equipment, signage, closures and ropes at the ski area and facilitates correction of safety problems. ESSENTIAL DUTIES

General Responsibilities
  • Reports to Vice President - Mountain Operations
  • Oversees all aspects of the Steamboat Ski Patrol and Bike Patrol, including but not limited to staffing, training, budgeting, scheduling.
  • Hire, orient, train, direct, motivate and oversee performance management of all patrol staff.
  • Develop and oversee mountain safety programs for guests and employees.
  • Oversee and provide direction for medical aid, avalanche mitigation work, out-of-bounds search and rescues, technical rescues, lift evacuations and incident investigation team. Implement and oversee daily speeder control.
  • Oversee, participate and evaluate the resort emergency procedures related to, but not limited to, ski, lift, trail and slope evacuations, lift auxiliary operations, firefighting procedures, incident command etc.
  • Oversee winter mountain setup, daily monitoring of conditions and maintenance including trail openings and closures, signage, ropes and pads.
  • Oversee summer on mtn safety including biking, hiking, lift evac etc.
  • Develop and oversee department budget including labor, supplies and capital.
  • Assists with the management of outside key stakeholder relations with groups such as the U.S Forest Service, Search and Rescue, local emergency service providers and local law enforcement.
  • Actively participate in resort leadership team meetings.
  • Be a proactive leader, collaborating with key stakeholders across the company, including and not limited to, Lift Operations, Risk & Safety, Lift Maintenance, Slope Maintenance and the President & COO.
  • Maintain a positive, professional and balanced rapport with employees, management and guests related to safety issues.
  • Be familiar with and contribute to developing Crisis Management Plans
  • Have input on future trail design and mountain master plan
  • Ensure understanding and compliance with all company policies and procedures as well as any regulatory requirements
  • Other duties as assigned


REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Minimum 5 years related ski patrol experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated progression of increasing responsibility
  • Proficiency in avalanche rescue operations, avalanche forecasting and mitigation methods.
  • Ability to interact and maintain positive relationships with guests, co-workers and management consistent with SSRC's Service Excellence standards.
  • First aid knowledge (Outdoor Emergency Care) and skill to use it.
  • The skills, knowledge and ability to organize, motivate, train and evaluate the performance of the group to the highest possible level.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state laws pertaining to ski area operations, explosives and EMS personnel
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Strong communications skills.
  • Financial budgeting skills
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years of age
  • Must be able to clearly speak and understand the English language.
  • Ability to problem-solve in a highly effective manner and maintain positive relationships with guests and staff, including management, subordinates and co-workers.
  • Must meet SSRC minimum driving standards and have valid driver's license; a successful motor vehicle record background check is required.


EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Associates degree or equivalent


The base salary range below represents the low and high end of the Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary and may be above or below the range based on a range of factors including but not limited to experience, education, training, location, merit system, quantity or quality of production, responsibilities, and regular and/or necessary travel. The range listed is just one component of Steamboat Ski and Resort Corporation total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term and long-term incentives.

Steamboat area base salary range: $90,000 - $100,000 per year

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must be able to hear clearly with or without a hearing device.
  • This position requires physical strength to help evacuate a lift, lift patients, ski any terrain, mitigate avalanche hazards, perform first aid on sick and injured guests, etc.
  • Work is performed in a mountainous winter environment in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to operate a snowmobile in a safe manner.
  • Must be an expert level skier.
  • Must be able to lift 30 lbs.
