JOB DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, reporting directly to the Deputy Director of Facility Engineering for facilities work and Deputy Director of Marine Maintenance for Vessel work. Performs project work on various marine vessels, waterfront facilities, and structures including supervising electrical contractors and other assigned personnel in the installation, repair, replacement and maintenance of electrical apparatuses, equipment, and electric wiring circuits.
Ensures all work is completed to NYC building code, ABS shipbuilding, or USCG rules.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS
Prepares and is responsible for the work of electrical contractors, electricians, and other assigned personnel in altering, repairing and maintaining appliances, equipment and wiring circuits in electrical installations for light, heat and power in or on marine vessels, buildings, bridges and related structures. Makes decisions relative to work procedures. Prepares work schedules and makes work assignments. Makes field inspections in connection with electrical installations and components of systems relative to work progress or need for alterations, maintenance, and repairs thereto. Prepares job orders and tool and material requisitions. Supervises the complete operation of the department shop. Consults with staff personnel, contractors, inspectors, and manufacturers' representatives in connection with department work. Operates a motor vehicle or related transport equipment to access work sites in the performance of assigned duties. Keeps records and makes reports. Actively participate in the training and development of junior staff. In addition, performs complex analyses of ship and facility electrical systems and equipment. Performs complex analyses of vessel propulsion systems, including AC variable speed drives, modern digital automation systems, and electrical power distributions including switchgear and switchboards, and on facility electrical systems, including power distribution, lighting, HVAC, emergency power systems, elevators, escalators, bridge operating machinery, etc. Works with ferry personnel on the analysis of electrical and shore power loads, emerging technology, and application thereof, as well as planning and maintaining preventive maintenance schedules. Prepares basic design plans or significant or complex portions of the design plans for major projects for the construction, remodeling, operation, maintenance or repair of ferry, terminal, and facility electrical systems. Makes interpretative detail sketches or layouts of intricate or fundamental portions or aspects of design plans and prepares designs, plans, contract and working drawings, contract specifications, and other technical specifications. Submits plans for approval and coordinates for regulatory review and approval of same. Supervises the conduct of field survey and construction inspection operations to secure compliance with contract and other specifications and conducts the inspection of the work to ensure compliance with codes and pertinent statutes, rules, and regulations. Prepares reports on contracts and contact estimates, contract modifications and recommendations of award. Supervises consultant and construction and repair work.

PREFERRED SKILLS
1.Proven ability in independent thinking and supervisory experience is highly desirable.
2.Strong background in project management and coordination.
3.Experience working in the field of marine electrical engineering, including design of new marine
vessel systems, design of upgrade/retrofit systems for installations on existing marine vessels, and the analysis of the performance of operating marine electrical systems;
4.Familiarity with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) rules and regulations

SALARY: FLAT RATE

WORK LOCATION: 1 Bay Street, Staten Island, NY 10301

HOURS/SHIFT: 35 hours/Monday-Friday

New York City residency is generally required within 90 days of appointment. However, City Employees in certain titles who have worked for the City for 2 continuous years may also be eligible to reside in Nassau, Suffolk, Putnam, Westchester, Rockland, or Orange County. To determine if the residency requirement applies to you, please discuss with the agency representative at the time of interview.

TWIC REQUIREMENT:
Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment. For further program information, visit: https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.

Minimum Qualifications

1. Six years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician acquired within the last fifteen years, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or
2. At least four years of experience as described in "1" above, plus sufficient satisfactory experience as an electrician's helper or apprentice electrician or training in the electrical field acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining experience. Six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of such helper experience, apprentice training or training in the electrical field. However, all candidates must have had at least one year of full-time satisfactory experience as a supervising electrician acquired within the last fifteen years.
License Requirements
A Motor Vehicle Driver license valid in the State of New York.
All licenses must be maintained for the duration of employment.

Preferred Skills

1.Proven ability in independent thinking and supervisory experience is highly desirable.
2.Strong background in project management and coordination.
3.Experience with Federal transportation grant issues and regulations a plus.
