Department Purpose

Student Housing and Dining Services (SHDS) is a self-supporting auxiliary that provides housing and dining services to approximately 15,000 undergraduate, graduate, and students with families who live in on-campus residential facilities (university owned/managed and Public-Private-Partnerships), as well as providing residential, retail and catering dining services for the campus community. Position has responsibility for daily programmatic & business operations for the UC Davis Orientation Program (9,600+ students & their families) and hiring, training, supervision and evaluation of career and student staff, including staff training. Serve the entire campus community in delivery of academic preparation, advising, transition & retention programs for new first-year and transfer students in consultation with senior campus leadership and academic & student affairs units.

Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Director, serves the entire campus community to oversee the daily operations, planning, preparation, staffing and implementation of the robust and complex new student & family Orientation program. Provides leadership, research and analyzes curriculum and metrics in accordance with CAS standards & best practices for OTR programs, college transition theories, and campus and divisional priorities. Directs work of Assistant Director and program Coordinators to maximize students' engagement and deliver high-impact programs designed to prepare students for the academic rigor, build networks of community & sense of belonging, understand & navigate campus, resources & involvement opportunities, and center equity & inclusion in all policies and practices. Manages and guides academic support & retention efforts for new students and families. Responsible for providing independent consultation & analysis via strong collaboration & appropriate political acumen with colleges, student affairs & other campus units; to build consensus, interact & communicate with internal/external constituencies at all levels (faculty, staff, administrators, City of Davis stakeholders, vendors). Contributes to assessment design, implementation and reporting. Engages in data-driven decision-making in partnership about design and curriculum of student-centered experiences. Directs the recruitment, supervision & evaluation of career & student staff. Responsible for curriculum, instruction & assessment of student staff training. Serves in absence of NSAS Director & emergency response in coordination with other OSD staff. Requires extensive expertise in orientation, supervision, training, project management, change management, academic support practices, & student development theories. This position requires an understanding of a college student's academic journey and expectations. The AD will work with the academic advising community to translate academic needs of incoming students and the departments that serve them. The position has delegated authority to represent Orientation and the department to the campus on matters of new student transition & retention issues, student development issues & peer training.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Spending extended periods of time in front of a computer terminal and typing on keyboard and sitting in meetings.
  • Walking tours of buildings and climbing stairs.
  • Lifting and carrying boxes of publications and equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Office area located near common space with students, professional staff, visitor traffic and noise from on-going meetings, telephone conversations, etc.
  • Full time position.
  • Must be able to work occasional overtime, evenings and varied lunch hours to meet operational needs.
  • Work occasional weekends and holidays.
  • Work may include a hybrid schedule as well as in and out-of-state travel.
  • Work hours will vary with program needs.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours during the Orientation programs. Restricted vacation during peak program times. W
  • Work and travel in extreme temperatures during Orientation program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience with career-level (professional) development, coordination & implementation of large, complex college events, including facilities, dining, technology & fees for new students, in a non-profit environment, demonstrating advanced knowledge of orientation/transition/retention in higher education.
  • Experience demonstrating advanced skills in critical thinking, communication, analysis, problem-identification & resolution, reasoning & management to anticipate, identify & evaluate policy decisions, programs & personnel, using skills to develop original ideas to solve problems.
  • Experience and strong skills in supervision, mentorship & leadership in university management to hire, select, train, direct work, motivate, evaluate & reward performance, influence attitudes and behaviors, ensure accountability & otherwise discipline career and/or student employees.
  • Experience demonstrating effective project management skills to identify, map & prioritize tasks & timelines effectively; appropriately delegate; coach employees with projects; work under pressure of governance, competing deadlines, meeting schedules & fast-paced time constraints.
  • Experience developing & facilitating training on student development theories, advising & counseling techniques, multicultural competencies, communicating complex data, new student & family OTR programs, to diverse (faculty, students, parents) audiences of various sizes.
  • Experience demonstrating interpersonal & diplomatic communication across departments & settings (email, Zoom, chat) using various technologies to positively & effectively interact with stakeholders, affect partnerships, outcomes and customer service, navigating political complexities of a large, research institution.
  • Experience demonstrating knowledge of risk assessment procedures along with the ability to interpret, evaluate, communicate and mitigate risks & consequences, policies & protocols.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • A Master's degree in college student personnel, higher education administration or equivalent related field & experience, including three or more years full-time professional experience (post-Master's degree), working in a large higher education, research institution, planning & coordinating events for large (5K-10K+) student populations; includes hiring, training, supervising large numbers of students.
  • Experience applying innovative solutions, developing recommendations and alternative courses of actions to complex problems. Experience with long-term planning and change management and knowledge of Student Affairs/Life specialization, advising & mentoring competences, leadership theory, & emerging research on university level OTR and/or FYE programs & services.
  • Experience with developing and teaching college level course (unit bearing) curriculum and trainings, including experience developing programmatic outcomes with faculty, student affairs and/or administrative leadership; cultivating and sustaining ongoing collaborative relationships to achieve program & university goals.
  • Experience employing effective organizational, time management & budgetary skills to achieve timely progress on multiple simultaneous complex projects, distribute effort appropriately & maintain high level of productivity, as well as demonstrate ethical stewardship of students' money by monitoring/tracking expenses and making resource recommendations.
