The Salvation Army Midland Division Headquarters located in St. Louis, Missouri is looking for a Controller! This position is expected to advance and support the Mission of The Salvation Army. Responsible for developing, implementing, monitoring, and controlling the financial activities of The Salvation Army Midland Division, under the direction of the Divisional Executive Director of Business. Position is expected to comply with and meet The Salvation Army, Federal, State and Local policies, and standards.

This is a full-time 40 hour per week position.

Essential Functions



  • Responsible for the financial management of the Divisional Headquarters Finance Department operations to include: maintaining systems and procedures for financial and administrative operations; executing and evaluating all fiscal procedures; presenting required financial reports, statements and statistics for internal and external use, including analytical management reports of all operating units to Divisional Finance Board and Finance Advisory Committee of the St. Louis Advisory Board as directed.
  • Coordinates the preparation of the Midland Division St. Louis City Fund operating budget, including United Way budget preparation and presentation.
  • Coordinates the preparation of the Midland Division General Fund budget.
  • Maintains contact with outside groups, such as banks, vendors, management companies and United Way representatives; serves as the liaison to the St. Louis Advisory Board and related committees.
  • Coordinates internal audits with Territorial Headquarters and external audits with a local audit firm(s).
  • Supervises and trains Finance Department staff; recommends personnel actions in the Finance Department.
  • Assists in supervising, and training of corps and institution accounting personnel, including bookkeepers, business managers, and business directors, including making recommendations for personnel actions.
  • Provides direct supervision to the City Fund Director, General Fund Director, Corps Accounting Center Director and Government Grants & Contract Accountants.

Education and Experience



  • Bachelor's degree with a business concentration specifically in accounting or finance. Master's degree a plus.
  • Preferred Certified Public Accountant with a minimum of five years' experience in accounting, preferable in a social service agency or related area, with one year of supervisory experience. A combination of education and experience would be accepted.
  • A working knowledge of computer systems, including spreadsheet processing (Microsoft Office)
  • Must be a team player, a self-starter, able to multi-task several projects at the same time and perform well with minimum supervision.
  • Must demonstrate ability to think independently and exercise sound judgment.
  • Must complete fidelity bond form.
  • Requires valid driver's license and pass TSA MVR check.


Physical and Working Conditions



  • Capable of performing the above essential duties in an office environment to include using a computer, answering phones, etc.
  • Most work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. However, this position will be outdoors while traveling to and from meetings.
