The candidate for the Senior Manager, Environmental Compliance position will cover the Central region of the U.S., which includes markets in ERCOT, MISO, SPP, and nearby states. Duties will include management of direct reports overseeing projects at late-stage development and execution as it pertains to project-specific coordination and compliance with obtained permits, pertinent laws, and regulations including coordination with AHJs and other agencies. The position also involves coordination between members of the development, execution, and operation team within AES. The successful candidate will have the aptitude to succeed in managing, mentoring, training, and providing strong leadership to a team of subject matter experts that oversee a portfolio of projects in various stages of development and construction.

The role requires the ability to manage and grow a team while working on multiple tasks and special projects. The successful candidate will be a strong and compassionate leader, and able to develop relationships across a large functional team that includes origination, project development, legal, finance, engineering, construction, outside consultants, landowners, customers, project stakeholders, and utility companies. This position includes travel to offices and projects within the US.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

The Senior Manager of environmental compliance will support the Director and manage / mentor direct reports as they work with cross-functional teams in activities leading to the successful execution and delivery of renewable energy projects in development, construction to operational handoff.

  • Management, mentoring, and development of direct reports in your region
  • Work with Director and Senior Leadership teams to develop a strategy for the team's continued success; provide support for other relevant team and company goals
  • Assist in conducting bid reviews, researching, and understanding federal, state, local, and contract environmental requirements
  • Foster a culture of a high-performing team grounded in collaboration
  • Prioritize meeting department and company goals; identify and elevate risks to ensure success
  • Identify opportunities to develop, improve, and implement internal procedures and processes
  • Track and manage workloads of direct reports; assist as needed and re-assign projects as needed
  • Provide QA/QC reviews of various documents and deliverables for projects managed by direct reports and their teams
  • Provide expert guidance and assistance in the prospecting process where needed to the siting teams to secure viable renewable energy projects across multiple local, state, and federal jurisdictions
  • Act as a representative for AES in meetings with the community, elected officials, and regulators
  • Support M&A efforts across the US
  • Support project finance and legal teams
  • Keep up to date with company priority projects and disseminate company goals and updates to the team

Required Experience and Competency:

  • 8+ years of experience in renewable energy (solar, wind, battery energy storage).
  • Undergraduate or graduate degree in environmental sciences, environmental engineering, geology, geography, or a related field.
  • Expert knowledge of renewable energy construction process and evaluation including best management practices, environmental regulations, and risk identification and mitigation.
  • Experience leading teams of highly skilled SMEs.
  • Proficient Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, ESRI ArcGIS, and Google Earth.
  • Advanced knowledge of environmental permits and regulations related to the region including NEPA, USACE, CWA, ESC and SWM regulations, DOT, SPCC and waste management, water quality, air quality, T&E species, ESA, USFW, tribal relations, and historical resources.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, decision-making, problem-solving, analytical, and time management skills.
  • Self-starter, self-reliant, and capable of performing duties and responsibilities with minimal supervision.
  • Team player with strong initiative, and the ability to work autonomously to complete and delegate tasks.
  • Proven track record as a credible, reliable subject matter expert for team members in technical matters.
  • Ability to interact effectively with stakeholders, consultants, and governmental agencies.
  • Good judgment and sound decision-making skills.
  • Ability to travel to projects and offices within the US.

Position Conditions

  • This position will require work in both an office and field environment
  • Ability to lift 25lbs.
  • Up to 25% of the time may be dedicated to travel to offices and projects
  • Varying environmental conditions at project sites may include steep grades, wet conditions, and inclement weather
  • Night and weekend work may be required for this position
  • Adherence to AES safety rules and performance expectations

The expected salary for this position, at commencement of employment, is between $145.000 and $187.000/Annual; however, base pay offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, including market location, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements such as annual bonus, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, vision, life, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if a candidate receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an "at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
